Ruth Mikkelsen, 89, born Sept. 6, 1919 in Russelville, a resident of Summerdale, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 in Foley.
She was a member of Marlow United Methodist Church, having served as a Sunday School teacher and member of the United Methodist Women. She was recognized by UMW with a Special Mission Recognition in 1989.
The Baldwin County and state of Alabama Extension Homemakers organization bestowed upon her the “Leadership-Service, Outstanding Honoree” in 1971; “Distinguished Prominent Leader of Alabama,” in 1973-74; “Alabama Extension’s Appreciation,” in 1986; “Baldwin County Appreciation Award for Unselfish Service,” in 1983; and “Baldwin County Outstanding Leadership plaque in 1997.
In 2003 she was given a “Dedicated Service honoree” award for long-term membership and leadership roles in the Foley Performing Arts Association and Marlow United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Annette (Don) Blaylock and Dr. Carol Mikkelsen; son, Eugene (Sarah) Mikkelsen; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9 at Marlow United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Pine Rest Memorial Park in Foley.
