Lt. Col. Robert W. Mitchell Sr., USAF (Ret), 81, a native of Chicago, died Friday, April 25, 2008 at his residence.
He was a resident and business owner in Fairhope for 37 years.
He graduated from Northwestern University in1946. He completed the Air War College Air University in 1973 at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
Col. Mitchell was commissioned an officer in the US Navy in 1947, and transferred to the US Air Force in 1950. He was one of the few Air Force officers to wear Navy Wings. Col. Mitchell became a Lifetime Member of the Naval Aviation Museum Association in 1975. He was a member of MSS for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, David Robert Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Doris K. “Dottie” Mitchell of Fairhope; three sons, Robert W. “Sandy” Mitchell Jr. of Fairhope, Charles Albert (Barbara) Keys Mitchell of Fairhope and Wesley David Mitchell II of Cocoa, Fla.; and three grandchildren, January Mitchell (Jonathan) Taylor of Mobile, John Todd Mitchell of Los Angeles and Cindy Cathleen (Brent) Fisher of Okinawa, Japan.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 28, from the parlor of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope.
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the National Aviation Museum Foundation, 1750 Radford Blvd., NAS Pensacola, 32508.
