FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Match MVP Courtney Harlan of McGill-Toolen Catholic netted a goal in each half for the Mobile County all-stars and Rebekah Diring of Spanish Fort finished a feed from Caroline Seibt of Fairhope for the Baldwin County side for a 2-1 final score in the sixth annual Battle of the Bay Charity Soccer Showcase showdown at W.C. Majors Field Friday. The Mobile County girls lead the series 5-0-1.
The annual event supports Kicks for Cancer and The Children’s Hospital at the University of Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The 2011 showcase raised more than $2,500 from ticket and concession sales.
Both all-star teams were led by coaches from Spring Hill College and the University of Mobile.
UM coach Kevin Laux led the girls team from Mobile County. He gave credit to the athletes.
“A lot of times in games like this, when you’ve got a team for only a couple of days, you can’t really do a lot to work with them," he said after the first match. ”It really comes down to almost an individual effort. The person who is going to be announced as the game MVP, Courtney Harlan, was very, very good tonight. She had two goals and set up several other chances and had a great game. Not to take away anything from the other team, but we defended fairly well, very aggressively and athletically. I had three different keepers in tonight. It was a good performance and a good game to watch.”
Spring Hill mens coach Tim Brooks who led the Baldwin Girls said the competitor in him always hates to lose, but the sting is lessened when the the event benefits a good cause.
“I think it’s always mixed emotions,” he said. “And from a competitive side you never like to lose, but it’s all for a good cause. Charity is a good purpose. For me, I look at it from the week of training with the girls. I really enjoyed myself because it has been a while since I was on the girls’ side. As far as the game goes, if you had to just break it down, it’s tough. We gave a goal away in the last 10 seconds of the first half. When you are chasing a game it is tough from there. In the end, it’s sad to have to lose but it’s all for a good reason here.”
Harlan’s first goal broke the first-half 0-0 stalemate after 44 minutes and 48 seconds of solid defense by both sides. Caroline Frangos got the assist on a hurried corner kick as time ran out in the first 45-minute half. Good defense dominated the first 17 minutes of the second until Harlan scored again.
The Baldwin side avoided the shutout when Seibt drew UMS-Wright keeper Carrie Crook before crossing to Diring inside with about 25 minutes remaining. Seibt nearly tied it on another drive, feigning another cross before taking the shot, but Crook stayed with the ball, charged and knocked down the shot.
Spanish Fort keeper Johannah Scott had several saves in the match as well.
