FAIRHOPE — The Baldwin all-star girls took the early lead against the Mobile all-stars but fell behind to lose 4-3 at W.C. Majors Field Friday in the 5th annual Battle of the Bay Charity Soccer Showcase in Fairhope.

Emily Baggett of Daphne struck first after the Baldwin team had dominated possession most of the opening 20 minutes leading up to her goal off a corner kick from DHS teammate Maria Peters for the 1-0 lead with 25 minutes left in the first half.

But five and seven minutes later the Mobile girls answered on two bang-bang goals by Auburn-bound Tori Ball of St. Paul's for the 2-1 lead and the momentum shifted. Then with nine minutes left in the half, Caroline Frangos of McGill-Toolen Catholic found the net for a 3-1 half time cushion.

Mobile coach Brian Person, women's coach at the University of Mobile, said the tide swung in the first half, but the Baldwin side never quit.

"To be fair, it was a very even game and it was exciting and pretty competitive all around," he said. "At halftime we just really emphasized to the girls that the winner of this game was going to be the one who competes the hardest and wants it the most. I thought as far as talent goes it was pretty even across the board, but I thought maybe we had just a little bit more bite to us than they did and that was the difference. I think if I had to (name an MVP) it would probably be Tori Ball because she scored the two for us and then we put her in the back and she did a great job to help protect the lead."

Chanel Elgin of Daphne cut the lead to 3-2 with 30 minutes remaining in the match. The University of Southern Mississippi signee and others had excellent shots at the Mobile goal, but the UMS-Wright freshman keeper made four key second-half saves.

Sarah Duren of Mary G. Montgomery added a goal for Mobile with 6:25 left to play to make it 4-2, but a minute later Alicia Linder of Spanish Fort's 5A state runner up Toros finished a nice pass from Caroline Seibt of Fairhope to make it 4-3.

Baldwin coach Bill Urban of the Blast Soccer Club said his team played well to get back into the game and fought hard until the final whistle.

"I think they took their chances better than we did, they just had a little bit better finishing," Urban said. "I thought we knocked the ball around very well. We played it to feet and then we created chances going forward by playing the ball through."
