BELFOREST, Alabama — Two student-athletes from Baldwin County have been honored as regional winners in the Bryant-Jordan Foundation Scholarship Program and will be recognized statewide Monday.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association has announced Tyler Orem of Spanish Fort and Molly Pinnix of Bayside Academy as two of the 96 regional winners.
Pinnix, a track and field/cross-country runner for the Admirals is the 2013 Region 1 winner in the 3A Scholar-Athlete category and Orem, a runner for the Toros, is the 2013 Region 1 winner in the 5A Achievement category.
Regional winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and may win more scholarship money after an overall winner in each category has been announced.
Regional winners in the organization's two categories -- Scholar-Athlete and Achievement -- will travel to Birmingham for the annual awards banquet. Achievement category winners have overcome personal obstacles to excel academically and athletically, while Scholar-Athlete winners are judged largely on academic success. Regional winners from Mobile County include Tyler Beard, UMS-Wright; Julius Fantroy, Jr., Alma Bryant; Carmen Carlos, McGill-Toolen Catholic and Peyton Jemison, Faith Academy.
