Mom arrested on child endangerment

DAPHNE, Ala.—The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michelle Jaquess, 36, of Daphne, Wednesday, for endangering the welfare of a child, Maj. Anthony Lowrey said.

Jaquess told Daphne police and Baldwin County deputies that she had been inside Bentz Pizza Pub, on County Road 13, waiting on a pizza for a few minutes, and that she had consumed only one alcoholic drink, according to police. Officers  determined—after Jaquess allegedly refused a sobriety test—that she had consumed more than one drink and that she had been there longer than 30 minutes, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The Daphne Police Department acted on an anonymous tip—called in around 10:30 a.m.—they received about a woman who had gone into a pub and left a child in a Chevy Suburban.

Bentz Pizza Pub is outside of city jurisdiction, so the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to intervene.

Two officers checked the condition of the child to find that she was cold to the touch because of the running air conditioning, but was otherwise okay, according to a news release.

Jaquess’ estranged husband was reached and he came to pick up their 1-year-old daughter from the scene, police said.

Jaquess was placed under arrest and taken to the Baldwin County Corrections Center. She has been released on bond and is awaiting a hearing.

She faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
