Less smoke seemed to be billowing from the woods this morning on backcountry trails, but the Orange Beach Sportsplex was still shrouded in smoke.
Woods directly behind the city’s shop and adjacent to the Sportsplex were smoldering and in some cases small blazes dotted the woods.
“Here on our side — the fire’s divided into two divisions, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach — it’s fairly well contained,” Battalion Chief Wesley McConnell said. “We’ve had crews all night going around hitting hot spots, working the fire lines, making sure it don’t jump it. As long as we got a wind like this, I think we’re going to be all right.”
Sunday morning there was optimism as well, but an afternoon wind kicked up and restoked the fire in several areas causing some tense moments Sunday evening.
“The forecast for today is light winds,” McConnell said. “But they have missed it a couple of times.”
The area of concern at the moment for McConnell was the area behind the city shop.
“This morning we’re going to try to get our city crews with the bulldozers in there,” McConnell said. “That’s really the last spot we have any fire that keeps coming back there between Money Bayou and Power Line Road. It’s burning there in the middle where we can’t get our trucks to it.”
