Montrose Realtor Spence Monroe tapped as 2012 BCAR Realtor of the Year

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- Montrose Realtor Spence Monroe was named 2012 Realtor of the Year at the Baldwin County Association of Realtors meeting held Thursday at the BCAR office in Robertsdale.

“I hope you prepared brunch,” said Kevin Corcoran, 2011 Realtor of the Year in making the presentation to Monroe during the Association’s semi-monthly breakfast meeting, “because by the time I finish reading all of his accomplishments, we’ll be able to start serving sandwiches.”

Monroe, with Ashurst & Niemeyer, served as president of the Association’s Board of Directors in 2011 and currently serves on the Board as the immediate past president.

He has also served as vice president and secretary/treasurer for the BCAR and as president of the Association’s Multiple Listing Service.

He has served as state director and as a member of the Government Affairs Committee for the Alabama Association of Realtors.

He has served the Association on the Finance Task Force for four years, on the Nominating Committee for three years and on the local Government Affairs Committee.

He also worked to obtain the property for the new Association/MLS building.

A graduate of Vanderbilt with a BS in engineering and business, Monroe has also served his community as past president of the Alabama Water Environment Association, is a charter member of the Point Clear Rotary Club and a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club.

“It is great to be surrounded by good people in our Association,” said current BCAR Board President Jeff McLaurin, “and Spence Monroe is definitely one of those people. His service to this Association has been invaluable and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for his leadership.”

Following the presentation of his Realtor of the Year award, Monroe introduced the guest speaker, County Commissioner Tucker Dorsey.

Dorsey commended members of the Association for surviving the economic downturn, which began in 2006.

“The fact that you are here today is a testament to your resiliency and your ability to adapt to the situation,” he said. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you for weathering the storm.”

Dorsey said the County Commission is concentrating now on managing growth in the county that will be the result of the new Airbus plant being constructed in Mobile.

The $600 million facility will directly employ 1,000 people, but the far-reaching effects will be much greater, Dorsey said.

“I think we will see an immediate population increase of at least 25,000 as the result of this,” Dorsey said. “I lot of places have manufacturing shipped in but Airbus has said from the beginning that they want their suppliers close by and we are working hard to ensure that a lot of those suppliers come from Baldwin County.”

Dorsey commended longtime Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance Director Robert Ingram, who recently retired from the position, for his work in bringing industry to Baldwin County.

He said he also looks forward to working with the new EDA Director Lee Lawson.

“He is young, aggressive and very intelligent,” Dorsey said. “He is going to be doing a lot of traveling over the next few months to promote this county.”

When asked about the state of the county’s Emergency Management Agency, Dorsey also commended the work of new director Mitchell Sims.

“I’m proud of what we’ve been able to do in that area,” he said. “Our EMA system is in better shape than it’s ever been and Mitchell Sims was definitely the right person for that job.”

Dorsey said the Commission will be also be working aggressively to promote Baldwin County, particularly the mega-site property which the county now has an interest in.

The Commission will also be working to address concerns with infrastructure and subdivision regulations. Dorsey also addressed concerns about the county’s education system.

“There are certain things that we have to spend money on,” he said, “and our education system is one of those things.”
