FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Faulkner State Community College Department of Music will present Tom Morley in a presentation and lecture titled The History of American Fiddling. The event will be held Monday, at 7 p.m., in Centennial Hall on the college’s Fairhope campus. It is free and open to the public.

As a classical, folk, bluegrass and swing musician, Morley is one of the most visible violinists on the Gulf Coast.

Classically trained with a degree in music education, Morley has earned a living with his violin in almost every conceivable musical direction. He has played professionally on stage or in the recording studio in Celtic, Cajun, country, folk, bluegrass, classical, swing and jazz styles.

As a member of “new traditionalist” country artist John Anderson’s band in the 1980s, he earned a gold album for his contributions on “Wild and Blue,” which broke new ground in the country-crossover genre.

As a jazz violinist, Morley has had two CDs in national release — “Major & Minor Swing,” recorded with his own band, and “Talkin’ Swing,” recorded with New Orleans jazz clarinetist Tim Laughlin (with whom he did two European tours as a member of the New Orleans Jazz All-Stars).

His playing earned great reviews in national publications, including JazzTimes and Fiddler magazine.

Morley has also performed with his own band and others at such well-known venues as Snug Harbor, the French Quarter Festival and the Jazz & Heritage Fest.

His current bands include Mithril (Celtic/world music), Delta Reign (contemporary bluegrass) and Silverwood Quartet (eclectic chamber quartet).

His composition “The Poet of Tolstoy Park” was recently featured on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “A Chapter A Day” program and generated exceptional interest from listeners.

Besides his work as a performer, Morley currently teaches privately, and has appeared as a guest performer/clinician at several area colleges, string camps, and his own workshops.

He is also an endorser for Barcus-Berry electric violins.
