Mr. Samuel Churchill Davis of 382 Loop Road, Savoy, went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2016 with his family by his side.
He was born on Oct. 30, 1932 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, the eldest son of the late Leroy A. and Freedith (Churchill) Davis.
His family moved to Castle Hill, Maine in 1942, where he attended local schools. In 1952 he moved to Homestead, Florida where he worked as a potato grower, later moving the business to Magnolia Springs, Alabama, where he met his wife of 63 years, Alice (Lipscomb) Davis.
They were married on April 22, 1953 in Vernant Park Baptist Church by Rev. George Lee, and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary.
Sam was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 1, 1954. He was deployed to Germany for 18 months and was honorably discharged in 1956, having received the Army Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Upon returning to the United States, Sam joined Parry Farms, growing potatoes, purchasing farms in Chesterfield and Plainfield, Massachusetts, he continued farming, opening the Mister Potato business and raising hay. Late in 1971, Sam opened the original Mister Tire in Plainfield.
Sam was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Northampton for 40 years, serving as trustee. In 2010 he became a member of the First Baptist Church in Adams. Sam served as a Savoy town selectman for many years and later served as town assessor.
Sam enjoyed antique tractors, collecting them as well as restoring them. He was an airplane enthusiast and loved his cats and dogs. Sam was a hardworking man, whatever he put his hand to, he did well. He was very devoted to his family. In 2004, Sam also wrote his memoirs.
He appreciated Alice’s family in Alabama, having made many trips, taking all the children and equally enjoyed were their trips to Mexico, the Caribbean and Spain.
Survivors include his loving wife, Alice M. (Lipscomb) Davis; his daughter, Edith Davis Newton of Indiana; three sons, Larry Davis and his wife Carla of Savoy, Ken Davis and his wife Bonnie of Huntsville, Alabama and Bruce Davis and his wife Heather of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with two on the way; and two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ed Davis of Sheffield, Massachusetts; two sisters, Adele Benson of Alabama and Wilma Davis of Hatfield, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his adored daughter, Dianne Barbara Davis; his parents, Leroy and Freedith Davis; one sister, Jane Storey; and a son-in-law, Donald Newton Jr.
The family is appreciative of the loving care of Sam by his daughter-in-law Carla Davis, whose nursing skills were invaluable, HospiceCare in the Berkshires allowed Sam to be home under expert care and concern, and a large thank you to Gloria Richard, handling his primary care is much appreciated.
A memorial service for Sam Davis will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Commercial Street, Adams.
Burial will be private for the family at a later date.
