Mumford gets life in wife's shooting

David H. Mumford will spend the rest of his life in prison for shooting his wife to death on June 15, 2008.

Mumford, 69, was sentenced on June 11 by Baldwin County Circuit Court Judge Charles Partin.

According to Foley Police Department Deputy Chief Randy Bishop, the sentencing on Friday was attended by Police Chief David Wilson and Lt. David White, FPD’s investigations commander.

“The chief made a comment that throughout the sentencing (Mumford) showed no remorse whatsoever and showed none during the trial or at any time,” Bishop said on Monday.

“I think the sentence that he was given was very appropriate for the horrendous crime he committed, especially in front of his kids.”

Mumford was found guilty in April of shooting his wife, Theresa Ann Welsh, 46, to death. A jury deliberated about 45 minutes before returning the guilty verdict.

Two years ago Mumford and his 12-year-old son returned from a fishing trip at Alabama Point when marital issues boiled over. Welsh was planning on leaving Mumford, according to police. On that Sunday, Mumford kicked in the door at the residence on U.S. Highway 98 and shot Welsh several times as she tried to get away from him.

A 14-year-old son who was in the house at the time got into a fight with Mumford during the shooting incident.
