Municipalities gearing up for August elections

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- Municipalities throughout Baldwin County are gearing up for local elections which will be held in August.

At meetings held Monday night, councils for the city of Robertsdale and town of Silverhill passed measures to set procedures for the local elections, which will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28. Any run-off elections necessary would be held Oct. 9.

Qualifying for mayor and council for the Aug. 28 elections began Tuesday and will run through Tuesday, July 17 at 5 p.m. Anyone wishing to qualify for municipal elections must have a permanent address established within those municipal limits at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the qualification process.

The town of Silverhill voted Monday to appoint town clerk Patricia Bankester to perform the duties that would normally be provided by the mayor for the upcoming municipal elections.

According to Section 11-46-36 of the Code of Alabama, 1975 if the mayor is a candidate for the upcoming election, then the town must appoint a “disinterested person” to perform the duties normally performed by the mayor during any election.

Those duties include providing a school of instruction for the election officials who will conduct municipal elections and any run-off required and provide materials deemed helpful in their conduct.

Election officials in Silverhill will be paid $100 per day for their services with the inspector being paid $125 per day.

Both councils passed procedures Monday night providing compensation for the absentee election manager at a fixed sum of $50 per day for each day absentee elections services are performed from the date of delivery.

Procedures for absentee elections managers are in compliance with Section 17-11-14 of the Code of Alabama, 1975.
