FOLEY, Ala. — A Loxley man, who was seen in the Foley area on video buying “large ticket items” with a roll of hundred dollar bills, has been charged with the murder of a Pensacola gold-buyer.
David Game Coombs, 32, of Baldwin County Road 49 South, has been charged with capital murder in the death of William “Bill” Grunden on Jan. 29, 2009, according to a press release issued this week by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
Coombs was arrested late Wednesday at BCSO’s Robertsdale office. He was scheduled for a bond hearing on Friday afternoon.
Grunden’s body was discovered by a hunter on Truck Trail 17 in the Loxley area. Coombs is alleged to have shot Grunden with what BCSO said was a “small caliber pistol” after robbing him of a “large sum of money.”
Grunden died from a single gunshot to the head.
According to a BCSO release the day after Coombs’ arrest, investigators believe Coombs set up a fake gold deal with Grunden, who “bought and sold gold by the penny weight.”
Grunden came to Baldwin County on the day he was killed to meet with a client to purchase gold that exceeded $5,000 in value.
Coombs allegedly went to meet Grunden for a $300 loan, but Coombs said Grunden never met with him. Later that same day, Coombs was spotted on video with the roll of large bills with which he was purchasing items.
BCSO and Loxley Police Department were involved in Coombs’ arrest. Anyone with information regarding Coombs is asked to call BCSO at 972-6802.
