ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — An evening of music under the stars is being planned for the fall featuring the music of the Baldwin Pops Concert Band.
On Sunday, Oct. 25, Orange Beach will host the concert band at Waterfront Park beginning at 5 p.m.
The concert will be set up just north of the Arts Center, along the water. An organization of volunteer musicians from Baldwin and surrounding counties, the Baldwin Pops Concert Band strives to enhance the cultural environment of the area by providing free to the public concerts.
The band is sponsored by Baldwin County, the city of Fairhope, and Faulkner State Community College.
A common thread amongst the members of the band is their love for music, but band members come from all walks of life.
The band was founded by local musicians Regina Bush and Tom Robinson, Director of Continuing Education at Faulkner State Community College Borden Morrow, and band directors Joe Riemer and Steve Sims in May of 1997.
Riemer is the retired director of the Bay Minette Middle School Band and Sims is the retired director of the Fairhope High School Band.
“They play classical music, and they will play for a couple of hours,” said Orange Beach Councilman Brett Holk. “It will be a great evening. Everything is free. The band will do a session for about an hour, then will take a break and then do another session.”
Although the event is free, everyone is welcome to bring their own table and chairs and beverage of their choice.
“At the end they will have a tablecloth award for whoever has the nicest table set up,” Holk said. “So everyone should bring their table and chairs, maybe a bottle of wine, or a blanket and just sit out and enjoy some nice music.”
The band perfoms all types of music including classical, Broadway, big band, Dixie, jazz and marches.
Presently about 100 members strong, the band is made up of many of the County’s band directors, music teachers and professional musicians, but membership is open to anyone.
“It will be a nice, cool night with no rain or anything, so come on out and listen to some music with your neighbors and enjoy yourself,” Holk said.
