Nancy Phillips Hilley

Nancy Phillips Hilley, a resident of Orange Beach, Alabama, died peacefully at her home on Nov. 16, 2016.

She was born April 1, 1947 in Athens, Tennessee to Guy and Samye Jean Phillips.

She graduated from Bradley County High School in Cleveland, Tennessee and continued her education at Auburn University, where she received a bachelor's degree in education and was affiliated with Phi Mu Sorority.

After graduation she lived and worked in Atlanta and Dalton, Georgia as a social worker for over 25 years. Under her direction, the United Way of Northwest Georgia developed strategies for impact, started the De Toqueville Society and trained countless volunteers and staff to improve the lives of everyone in the region. In 1986, she was honored as Woman of the Year for her work as executive director.

She moved to Orange Beach, Alabama with her family in 1996 where she established a successful real estate career, spanning more than 20 years.

Nancy will be remembered for her outgoing personality, services to her church, social activities, love for the arts, music, Auburn University, her family and an overall "zest for life."

She was preceded in death by her mother, Samye Jean Sloan; father, Guy Taylor Phillips; stepfather, Charles L. Sloan; brother, Bill A. Phillips; and sister, Gayle Phillips Daughtery.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard Phillips Hilley (Jennifer), Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Samuel Bishop Hilley, Atlanta, Georgia; brother, Guye Maxwell Phillips (Courtney), Cleveland, Tennessee; and one grandson, Chapman Collier, Orange Beach, Alabama.

Her memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, 10 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach, Alabama.
