Nate, Maria not expected to threaten northern Gulf Coast

Gulf Shores, AL. — Two tropical storm systems are still swirling, one in the Gulf of Mexico and the other in the southern Atlantic, but neither are expected to threaten the northern Gulf Coast, according to date published by the National Weather Service.

The center of Tropical Storm Nate was located near latitude 20.0 north longitude 94.0 west in the Gulf of Mexico's Bay of Campeche. Nate is moving toward the west near 5 mph. This general motion with some increase in forward speed is expected during the next day or so.

The center of Nate will reach the coast on Sunday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 50 mph with higher gusts. Some slow strengthening is forecast during the next day or so and Nate could be near hurricane strength as it approaches the coast of Mexico on Sunday.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center.

Satellite and radar imagery indicate that the circulation of Maria continues to become less defined. If this trend continues Maria could dissipate as a tropical cyclone later today.

This morning Maria was estimated to be near latitude 16.9 north and longitude 61.2 west. Maria is moving toward the northwest near 15 mph and this general motion is expected to continue during the next day or two.

Maria is expected to pass over the Leeward Islands today and reach the Virgin Islands by later tonight.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Little change in intensity is expected as Maria moves across the northeastern Caribbean Sea. However, Maria could degenerate to a trough of low pressure later today.
