LOXLEY, Alabama — Local golfers Alex Green and Cynthia Navis, both of Point Clear, finished in the top 10 in their divisions at the AJGA Junior three-day golf tournament at Steelwood presented by AT&T in Loxley last week.
Daphne’s Caroline Beebe, a 2012 Bayside Academy graduate headed to play for the University of South Alabama this fall, finished 12th in her final AJGA event.
Green, who will be a sophomore at Fairhope High, shot rounds of 77-70-73 for a 220 finish tied for eighth in the boys division.
Navis is an incoming sophomore at Bayside Academy and tied for seventh, shooting rounds of 78-73-74 for a 225 total.
Brendon Jelley of Tulsa, Okla., captured the boys division championship after finishing with a 3-under-par 213. This is his first championship title with the AJGA.
Aleia Clark of Carlsbad, Calif., claimed the girls division championship after shooting a 1-over-par 217 and winning a seven-hole playoff.
After hanging in the middle of the pack during the first two rounds, Jelley shot a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to secure his low score total of 3-under-par 213.
Jelley took advantage of his short game and boasted seven birdies during the final round.
“It feels good,” Jelley said. “I have been close a few times so it feels good to finally break through and win.”
Davis Riley of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Brandon Pierce of Covington, La., tied for second place after carding a tournament total of 2-under-par 214, only one stroke behind first place. Tzu-Wei Lin of Bradenton, Fla., finished in fourth place with a 1-under-par 215. In fifth place was Ryan Celano of Naples, Fla., with an even par 216.
After a seven-hole playoff, Aliea Clark of Carlsbad, Calif., claimed the Girls Division Championship with a 1-over-par 217. Clark finished strong on the front nine with three birdies and a 1-under-par 35.
She finished the round at an even-par 72, which put her in a playoff for the championship spot.
At the end of the round, Clark was tied for first with Cheyenne Knight of The Woodlands, Texas, which immediately put them in a sudden-death playoff starting on No. 10. The girls played seven holes, which tied the AJGA’s record for the longest playoff. The competition was tight as Clark and Knight both shot six straight pars. Clark was able to secure first place after she made a par on No. 17 while Knight bogeyed the hole.
“It really means a lot to me. It's been a rough year and I really just want to build on this,” said Clark.
After losing the seven-hole playoff, Knight came in second with a 1-over-par 217.
Anna Sophia Bohmer of Cali, Columbia, and Grace Choi of Dallas, Texas, tied for third at 2-over-par 218.
