NBCEE to offer summer enrichment camps

BAY MINETTE — The North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education has lined up 12 summer enrichment camps, ranging from cooking to art and reading to technology.

Registration forms will be distributed through all north Baldwin schools but registration is open to all. Registration forms and class descriptions are also available on the foundation’s Facebook page by the same name. Class sizes are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The schedule includes:

•Cooking With Class will meet June 4-9, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m., at Baldwin County High. Children ages 7-12 will learn the basics of food and kitchen safety, how to set a table and use nice table manners. Led by Karen Sims, the cost is $40.

•Sew Simple will meet 1 to 3:30 p.m., June 11-15 at BCHS. Children ages 8-12 will learn basic sewing stitches, how to sew on a button, and make a hand-sewn embroidery pillow. Karen Sims will be the instructor and the cost is $35.

•Water Works And Rocket Scientists will meet 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 11-15 at Bay Minette Middle. Rising fifth- through eighth-graders will focus on water quality through various field trips and hands-on applications. Field trips include a visit 5-Rivers for a guided 2-hour tour on pontoon boat; North Baldwin Utilities wastewater treatment plants in Bay Minette; and Weeks Bay Estuarine to take part in a guided macro-invertebrate survey to help determine water quality. Throughout the week, students will also design and build bottle rockets during class time to test for distance and velocity. Transportation provided for all field trips by the city of Bay Minette. Darla Herrin will be the instructor. The cost is $50.

•Art For The Fun Of It will meet June 18-22, 9-11 a.m. for rising K-3rd grades and 1 to 3:30 p.m. for rising 4th-6th grades. The camp, led by various professional artists, will meet at Bay Minette Intermediate. Students will receive an introduction to painting and other mixed media to create their own masterpieces. The week will be capped off by a class led by Ricky Trione, who will help students create individual pieces and work on a collaborative effort for a public art piece to be displayed in the city. The cost is $50.

•Summer Dance Academy will meet June 18-22 at the BCHS gymnasium. Led by Elizabeth Bridges, students will learn a variety of ballet, jazz, and hip hop dance techniques, and then put on a performance for parents and guests at the end of the week. Classes will meet Monday-Thursday; with a Friday performance at 5:30 p.m. Class times are 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. (K-4th grades); 5:45-6:45 (5th-8th grades); and7 to 8 p.m. (9th-12th grades). The cost is $25 and $15 for each additional family member.

•Take A Summer Reading Tour will be offered 9 a.m. to noon June 25-29 at the BMIS library. Prior to the camp, the rising fourth- through seventh-grade students will select and read books from the summer reading list. Throughout the camp, students will discuss the books, do author studies and will focus on producing the book reports/projects that they will take back to school in August. Under the guidance of Gail Richerson, students will use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, photography, book-binding, laminating, and the students’ creativity to produce a product. The cost is $35.

•Junior Vehicle Engineering will meet 9 a.m. to noon June 25-29 at BMIS. Rising first- through third-graders will build projects with gears and motors with unique Lego kits. Students will learn basic engineering principles, gears and gear ratios, simple machines, forces in motion, problem solving and communication skills. Cost is $50.

•Collision Cars will meet 1 to 4 p.m., June 25-29 at BMIS. Rising fourth- through eighthgrade students will use Lego kits to build a variety of battling machines. Students will learn engineering principles, gear and gear ratios, electric motors and energy, friction, forces, motion and aerodynamics, problem solving and communication skills. Cost is $50.

•Summer Band Camp will be offered 9 to 11:30 a.m., July 9-13 at BMMS band room. This camp will be offered to incoming seventh-graders who plan to be in middle school band and rising eighth-graders who want a refresher course. This camp will provide one-on-one music instruction to help students prepare for middle school band. Stuart Ivey will be the instructor and the cost is $25.

•Cool Tools will meet 9 to 11:30 a.m., July 10-11, at BCHS. Under the instruction of Mary Beasley, rising ninth- and 10th-graders will learn a few features of the Macbook, such as text to speech, blue tooth etc. Students will create Google accounts and learned about Google docs, as well as other tools they could use for projects and studying such as study blue, quizlet, vokis, wordle, fodey, fakewall, timelinemaker, xtranormal. The cost is $20.

•Camp Mac! will be offered 9 a.m. to noon, July 16-20, at BMIS. Rising fourth- through seventh-graders will learn basic operations of using Macbooks and iPads in the school setting and will dive into programs such as Moodle, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and more. The students will be school-issued Macbooks and iPads for this course. Danielle Watson Brown will be the instructor. The cost is $40.

•Camp will be offered 1 to 4 p.m., July16-20, at BCHS. Rising seventh- through twelfth-grade students will have lessons on podcasting, imovie, garage band, iphoto, M-word, I-life, and creating project-based learning presentations. The class will use the school board issued Mac notebooks for this course. Danielle Watson Brown and Robert Wills will be the instructors. The cost is $50.
