NBCEE to offer summer enrichment camps

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The North Baldwin Coalition has lined up several fun and educational camps for this summer. The camps will be offered at various school campuses in north Baldwin County.

Registration forms will be distributed at area schools and can also be downloaded at nbcee.org. Students will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be secured with payment. The camps are open to all age-appropriate students and are not limited to those living in the north Baldwin area.

The slate of camps for 2016 includes:

June 13-17: Summer Band Camp 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Bay Minette Middle School Band room. (Rising seventh and eighth grade students who have participated in band for at least one year.) Students will have the opportunity to play popular band tunes and gain valuable experience which will include individual, small group, and full band settings. An informal “Show and Tell” concert for family and friends will round out the week at 11 a.m. Cost $40. Instructor: Josh Williams.

June 13-17: Super Duper Science Mania Camp 9 to 11 a.m. at Bay Minette Elementary School. (Rising second and third graders) Calling all scientists!  Explore! Create! Explode! Learn how to use the Scientific Method with fun exciting experiments.  If you want to experience hands-on science experiments that you will love, then this is the class for you. Cost $50. Instructor: Jan Smith.

June 20-24: Beauty School Camp 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at North Baldwin Center for Technology. (Rising seventh through ninth grades). Class size limited to 12 students.) Through the week students will learn the ins and outs of several beauty techniques including shampoo and conditioning, braiding, manicures, pedicures, facials and make-up application. On Friday, students can invite a friend or relative to be on pampered with all the skills learned during the camp. Each day will also include a safety lesson for each technique presented. Students must provide their own make-up. Cost: $50. Instructor: Vicki Defee.

June 20-24:Artrageous Art Camp from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Bay Minette Intermediate. (Rising K through sixth grades). Art teacher Jessica Merchant will lead the camp and students will be introduced to several mediums throughout the week to create their own masterpieces. Guest artists will visit the classes to work with students as well. Cost: $60. Instructor: Jessica Merchant.

June 27-July 1: “Hands on, Brains On” camp from 9 to 11 a.m. at Bay Minette Elementary/Intermediate School. (Rising first through fourth grades) Explore science through hands-on experiments and art projects. Biology, chemistry, meteorology and even physics are possibilities in this engaging week-long camp. Don’t wear your favorite clothes, science can be messy. Cost: $30. Instructors: Emily Ivey and April Fitzgerald.

June 27-July 1: Sixth Grade Band Camp at Bay Minette Intermediate band room. (Rising sixth graders). Rising sixth grade students interested in being a part of the band program can receive hands-on instruction to prepare for the year ahead. The morning camp (9 to 11 a.m.) is open to brass instrument players (trumpets, trombones, baritones) and the afternoon session (1 to 3 p.m.) will focus on woodwinds (flutes, clarinets and saxophones). ***Pre-requisite for this camp: Students should meet with band teachers at Perdido/Stapleton/Pine Grove/Delta on Parent Night to select instruments. Cost: $40. Instructor: Melanie Brannan.

July 11-15: “Fairytales, Fables, Myths and Legends” 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Bay Minette Intermediate School library. (For rising first through third grades). This week-long camp will focus on children’s fables, fairytales, myths and legends as the basis for a wide variety of activities including everything from cooking to art.  

Cost $50. Instruction: Ronda Campbell

July 11-15: “Lego-Mania” 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Bay Minette Intermediate School lab. (Ages 4-years and older) This hands-on curriculum from Bricks4Kidz introduces children to concepts of engineering, architecture and mechanics using LEGOS.  Campers will design and construct machines, buildings and other models using LEGO bricks and special Bricks4Kidz kits. Cost $75. Instructors provided by Bricks4Kidz.

July 11-15: “Jurassic Brick Land Camp” 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Bay Minette Intermediate School lab. (Ages 4-years and older) Inspired by the excitement of the Jurassic Park (and other dinosaur) movies and TV shows, and the innate intrigue of Dinosaurs — this creative camp will feature LEGO mosaics, 3D LEGO Builds, motorized LEGO projects, and more at Bricks 4 Kidz.  Campers will be engaged in STEM-enriched activities and making new LEGO-loving friends. Cost $75. Instructors provided by Bricks4Kidz.

July 18-22: “Story Central” from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Bay Minette Intermediate library. (Rising first to third grades)   The week-long camp will children’s literature as the basis for a wide variety of activities including everything from cooking to art!  Cost: $50. Instructor: Ronda Campbell. 

July 18-22: “Take a Summer Reading Tour” camp from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Bay Minette Intermediate School library.  (Rising fourth through eighth grades.) Students read books from their summer reading lists before camp and work on book reports during the camp to turn in at the beginning of school in August.  Students will use multimedia to produce typed book reports, power point presentations, and video book talks. Students must read the books in advance and should bring a USB flash drive to save their work. Cost $35. Instructor: Gail Richerson.

July 18-22: “CSI: Bay Minette” from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Baldwin County High School. (Rising fifth through eighth grades). Students will learn basic methods of collecting evidence at a crime scene, use investigative techniques to explore virtual crime scenes, and participate in hands on activities such as interviewing witnesses and processing evidence at this fun week long camp.  Cost $60. Instructor: William Jones.
