When thinking about a better lifestyle, many people think about finding a better job. Whether an adolescent or adult, one of the first steps they take is to successfully network.
This term relates to so many variables. It is thought of as the “meet and greet” approach. Networking directly relates to relationships, opportunities, career, connections, success, communities, business cards, contacts and a very popular tool: the Internet. People who share common interests find it quite simple to engage in conversation, yet there are some people in management or supervisory positions who might appear somewhat difficult to approach. For those seeking a new job or a promotion, it is always wise to network.
Being a “people” person has its benefits. However, one must possess the skills necessary to competently serve in a particular role. It actually takes both. I once heard a supervisor state to a coworker, “If people at work don’t like you, no matter how skilled you are, you will never proceed to a higher level.” Not only should you wish to be liked and show courtesy and respect toward others, you should also pay close attention to other significant factors that present the image you are wanting to be portrayed. For example, it is always wise to “dress the part” when attempting to transition into a new role. You must be willing to take on a larger role — not simply a different title.
Another important aspect to consider is the act of demonstrating that you are ready for a larger role. Show that you are capable of handling matters that would be addressed in the new position. Actions demonstrate one’s ability to manage or conquer a task. Moreover, when thinking about asking for a promotion, do not entirely talk about yourself, but maturely speak of your desires and ideas relating to the long-term success of the company. Basically, discuss how you would like to see the company succeed and what role you can play in making that happen.
One of the best ways to impress a boss or supervisor is to observe his or her actions and behave in a way that would impress that person. Be observant of what is considered of high importance to those who have the highest command and create a way that can make your desire for a better role or a pay raise result in a win-win situation for everyone involved. Some people are gifted at “rubbing elbows” with the right people; others are not comfortable with the politically savvy approach to networking.
Find what works with you and be proactive in your job search or advancement.
