ORANGE BEACH, AL — Will there be music, sweet, sweet music?

A restaurant hoping to move into a completed building on the western edge of Orange Beach on the beach road is seeking a modification to add outside seating on the west side of the building.

Nearby residents, who were very vocal and thus successful in preventing a Bob Marley-themed restaurant from locating there after they learned of the intention for it to be an outdoor music venue, are concerned they face that possibility again.

“Y’all all know how we feel about music outside,” resident Cecil Young, who lives directly south of the restaurant in his beachfront house, said. “And I don’t think they are going to sit outside and listen to the mosquitoes and yellow flies. They’re going to want music.

“You have to remember this. We’ve got an ordinance and we would like it to be kept to a minimum if they have it. They’re going to have a bandstand inside.”

Bimini Bob’s, formerly in two different locations at The Wharf, is seeking the modification, and hopes to open in the development known as Amber Isle.

The restaurant is part of Aloha Hospitality owned by former football player Bob Baumhower, and includes Baumhower’s, Compleat Angler and Bob’ Victory Grille. The company is also set to open Dauphin’s this year in Mobile in the RSA-BankTrust Building.

Bimini Bob’s is just one of more than a dozen new or planned restaurants in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.

City Planner Griffin Powell said if Bimini Bob’s wanted to include outdoor music, it would mean another trip to the Planning Commission.

“Bimini Bob’s will go for a minor modification the Amber Isle PUD to have outdoor seating on the west side of the restaurant,” Powell said. “If they wish to have outdoor music, then there will need to be a major modification to the PUD, which will require a public hearing and recommendation from Planning Commission and public hearing and approval from the City Council.”

In the same development, a Southern Grind Coffee House is planned for inside of the Indigo Hotel, which is currently under construction. Southern Grind also has a location on Main Street at The Wharf.

Others in the works along Canal Road in Orange Beach, west of Alabama 161, include a Cactus Cantina in the Commons in the old CenturyLink location and Luna’s Eat and Drink next to Cosmo’s, which is nearing completion.

Montego’s Caribbean Café and Bar is planning to move into the old Baumhower’s space at The Wharf, with an eye on opening in February. This space was also formerly a Live Bait location.

Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill, which has a restaurant and store in Fort Morgan and Sassy Bass Beachside Grill on First Avenue West in Gulf Shores, is taking over the Happy Harbor Marina Road location.

Happy Harbor sold its state line location to the Flora-Bama in March of 2015 and its County Road 6 location was sold and is now called Beau’s Place. Happy Harbor still runs a water sports business on Marina Road, but a creamery and pizzeria at the state line is closed.

Others in the works include New Orleans-based The Ruby Slipper, which will move into a new building, once completed, on the north side of beach road in Orange Beach.

“They recently obtained site plan approval from the Planning Commission to locate in the Summer Salt commercial subdivision on Perdido Beach Boulevard, west of Live Bait,” Powell said.

Powell also said a Starbucks is planned in the Publix shopping center complex behind CVS, where site work is underway.

Under construction in Gulf Shores, east of Tacky Jacks, is the Big Beach Brewing Company, a brew pub being opened by Dr. Jim Shamburger.

Recently opened restaurants in Gulf Shores include Bywater Bistro on 24th Avenue West under the Alabama 59 bridge and Duck’s Coastal Kitchen.

Duck’s is in the location that formerly housed Big O’s Seafood and GooRoo’s Grill. Duck’s Diner has also had a long-standing business in Orange Beach by the city golf course just off of Canal Road.

Recently new to Orange Beach are Pappadakis Greek Restaurant just off of Canal Road in the old Eat! location near The Wharf; Anchor Bar on the dock at Hudson Marina and Little New Orleans in the Walmart shopping center.

Two staples of the restaurant business on Pleasure Island, Tacky Jacks and the Shrimp Basket, are working on expansions in the off season.

The Shrimp Basket at Zeke’s Marina on Beach Road is moving and expanding its kitchen in the storefront space west of the current restaurant. The chain, which has restaurants in three states, recently bought the strip mall property at Zeke’s that faces Beach Road.

Tacky Jacks in Orange Beach is expanding its kitchen and adding storage between the restaurant and cigar bar.

Amber Isle has been plagued by fits and starts in a 10-year history of ever-changing plans, delays, reevaluations and setbacks. Ron Jon Surf Shop has been up and running since May.

The restaurant building where Bimini Bob’s is looking to locate was originally going to be a Wing Shack from North Alabama, but the plans fell through.

The Indigo will have 63 rooms in a four-story building when complete. A smaller hotel, White Sands, will be built between Ron Jon and Indigo, and is also four stories. It is planned for 36 rooms as well as a restaurant.
