U.S. Navy Capt. John Perrett begins his first day on the job

Monday as director of the Baldwin County Emergency Management

Agency, after a months-long, nationwide search for a replacement in

the wake of Melvin Stringfellow’s resignation in April.

The Baldwin County Commission approved an employment contract

Aug. 4 for the 1979 Baldwin County High School graduate.

He currently is the U.S. Navy’s emergency preparedness liaison

officer for the state of Tennessee, where he is working with the

Tennessee Army and Air Guard and the Tennessee Emergency Management

Agency to assist with tornado and flooding response and

recovery.

He is a resident of Franklin, Tenn., but maintains close ties

with Baldwin County, he said.

“I was there for Hurricane Frederic, and consider Baldwin

County my home,” he said in an e-mail. “I have property in Gulf

Shores and immediate family members in Spanish Fort, Daphne and

Gulf Shores.”

Shannon Spivey, director of the county’s call center served as

interim EMA director while the commission searched for a

replacement. More than 80 applications were received

nationwide.
