New Fairhope fire station at Parker Road put on hold

FAIRHOPE, Alabama - Plans for a fourth fire station in Fairhope, which has been criticized for its proposed location, have been delayed following the Sept. 2 opening of bids for the construction project.

“The committee voted to reject all bids,” Assistant Fire Chief Dale Kelly said Saturday. “The lowest bid was out of our price range.”

The site of that station was proposed for the eastern end of Parker Road just north of the Publix Super Market.

“We’re going back to look at all options,” said Fire Chief Chris Ellis, adding that one of those options would be to find a new location for the station.

Ellis said the selection committee was appointed by his predecessor fire chief and is comprised of firefighters.

The proposed Parker Road site has been criticized as possibly dangerous in that it is located at a dead end next to a residential neighborhood and accessible by only that one road at a traffic intersection at U.S. Highway 98.

“That’s one option at this point,” said Ellis, referring to finding a different site for a fourth fire station.
