New security features roll out for Alabama EBT cards

Posted

Alabama EBT cardholders have new tools to help protect their benefits from fraud, thanks to recently launched security features from the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

The department has added Lock/Unlock and alert functions to EBT cards, accessible through the ConnectEBT app and website. These updates aim to give SNAP recipients more control over their accounts and reduce unauthorized transactions.

The Lock/Unlock tool lets users disable their cards for all in-store and online purchases or limit use to online purchases within Alabama. DHR recommends the full lock option, which blocks all transactions regardless of location.

Cardholders can also enable alerts to monitor account activity through text messages, emails or app notifications. These alerts are designed to keep users informed of every transaction and help detect suspicious activity quickly.

To activate the features, users can choose between the ConnectEBT app or the website:

Using the ConnectEBT App:

  1. Download the app
  2. Log in or create an account
  3. Tap “Lock/Unlock” on the home screen
  4. Choose:
    1.  “Lock Card Everywhere” – blocks all transactions, including online (recommended)
    2.  “Lock Card” – blocks use outside Alabama but allows online purchases

Using the ConnectEBT Website:

  1. Go to www.connectebt.com
  2. Log in or create an account
  3. Select the “Card” tab on the home screen
  4. Click on “Lock/Unlock”
  5. Choose one of the two available options

DHR said the new tools are part of a broader effort to strengthen protection for public assistance programs. The agency plans to continue working with its vendor to introduce additional security enhancements.
