SUMMERDALE — Getting Summerdale’s new water well is taking longer than expected.
During Tuesday’s Summerdale Town Council work session, new Public Works Director Lee Irwin said that Monday, the well flowed at a rate of 422 gallons per minute for six hours. He explained that the ideal average rate is actually 500 gallons per minute but 250 gallons more than that would ensure the average.
“It has to pump more than it’s rated,” the public works director said.
As previously reported, this new well is intended to replace Summerdale’s current well, which was shut down when ADEM testing deemed it necessary last year. In September, the Summerdale Town Council approved geology work on the project to Dan O’Donnell for $22,400, who has been involved with the endeavor since it began. At that time, then Public Works Director John Resmondo estimated that construction efforts would be completed by December.
During Tuesday’s workshop, Irwin said state regulators have plans to return to the site for additional tests on the well.
“ADEM is coming next week for more samples,” he told the Council.
Since the original, 10-year-old well was shut down, the town of Summerdale has purchased water from neighboring utility companies.
Also Tuesday, the Summerdown Town Council discussed:
Workman’s compensation insurance annual renewal for the Summerdale Fire and Police Departments, in the amount of $23,869.
Appointments to the Town Planning Commission and Zoning Board.
Work being done by BIS on the town’s new Web site.
The town’s new museum, which will be housed in the Summerdale Community Center. The facility is anticipated to open in March.
The town’s participation in the Alabama Severe Weather Sales Tax Holiday, which is slated for February.
The rezoning of property owoned by Mike and Jim Fisher LLC to B-2.
The possibility of moving the Public Works Office.
Hiring a new part-time secretary for the Summerdale Police Department.
Implementing a town curfew.
The Council also heard a report of the Summerdale Police Department, which included 47 felony arrests in 2012.
