FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Patina Gallery, 54 N. Section St. in Fairhope, will present new works by artist Kim Sessums, beginning Friday, Dec. 5, during First Friday ArtWalk.
The show will open with a reception for Sessums from 6-8 p.m., and continue throughout the month.
The gallery will also feature the music of “A Touch of Jazz” during the reception.
Sessums is a talented and recognized sculpture artist, who also excells as a drawing and painting artist.
Major works of note include a bronze portrait bust of renowned painter Andrew Wyeth, executed at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Wyeth, wherein Wyeth sat for the sculptor in his Chadd’s Ford home and studio; the bronze portrait bust of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Eudora Welty, executed as she sat with Sessums in her lifelong family home in Mississippi; the only figurative portrait bust of renowned evangelist Billy Graham; and a monumental sculptural tribute to honor the Colored Troops of The Vicksburg Campaign in The Civil War, which resides in The Vicksburg National Military Park, commissioned by The Department of The Interior.
Sessums’ works are included in a vast range of private and public collections, including Graham’s home, the University of Mississippi, Oprah Winfrey and Wyeth.
His artistic formation was shaped at an early age wherein he had survived the separate deaths of both parents by age 6.
Overcoming boredom and loneliness growing up in a rural area at his grandparents’ home, Sessums’ imagination led to an unexpected joy of studying the character and form of those around him.
Their every nuance was committed to memory and later recorded in written journals from which those memories and emotions were turned into visual art.
Sessums’ brother, Kevin, is a renowned New York Times best-selling author from Mississippi.
Sissy, who lives in New York and was recently named to be a featured weekly columnist for Parade magazine.
Kevin was also executive editor of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, contributing editor of Vanity Fair for 14 years and his works have appeared in a range of other magazines including Elle, Travel & Leisure, Playboy, Out and Show People.
