In honor of the pending turn of the calendar from 2014 to 2015 in a mere matter of days, we at The Foley Onlooker thought we would ask a few members of the community what plans or routines they have for New Year’s Eve or Day. Below are their responses.
“We have no special routine on New Year’s Eve, but we always watch football on New Year’s Day — Roll Tide! Beat the Buckeyes!”
— Russ Moore, Baldwin County Public Schools assistant superintendent

“Every New Year’s Eve we have a get together with a group of friends. As we get older it’s becoming a chore, but we stay up till midnight. I also hope to be watching a pretty good football game on New Year’s Day in New Orleans.”
— Bradley Byrne, U.S. Congressman, District 1 Rep.
***
“For New Years, since our children have their own parties, my husband and I celebrate with friends in Pensacola.”
— Leslie Lassiter Gahagan, city of Foley environmental manager
***
“I enjoy the New Year’s Eve count down with my wife.”
— David Wilson, Foley police chief

“At this point in my life it arrives quietly with my beloved husband at my side enjoying the promise of continued happiness.”
— Alida Given, Magnolia Springs librarian
***
“Always black eyed peas, corn bread and football.”
— Huey “Hoss” Mack, Baldwin County sheriff
***
“We usually have a quiet night with a few close friends over to our house followed by a big dinner on New Year’s Day. And a lot of football!”

“A New Year’s tradition that began with my dad and brothers when I was a young child and now continues is to watch all the bowl games on TV. In the early days, I can remember my dad having two TVs sitting on top of each other before picture-in-picture was a common feature.”
—Karen Moore, Baldwin EMC vice president

“When Kim and I first meet back in the early ‘80s, New Year’s Eve has always been a very special time for us. In fact, it’s our anniversary. That’s right, we got married on New Year’s Eve at 6 p.m. We found that Dec. 31st (New Years Eve) would be an easy date for me to remember so that I wouldn’t forget our anniversary. Not only that, we also figured that wherever we go in the world on New Year’s Eve there’s always a party. Also, back when we first got married over 30 years ago, money was tight and the church was already decorated with Christmas flowers like poinsettias etc... which was less money we had to spend for the wedding, I like to think we were exhibiting good financial restraint back then. In these latter years, we can afford a few more luxuries, therefore, we always try to travel somewhere that we can enjoy the festivities as we celebrate how far we’ve come and ring in another year in our marriage.”
— John Conti, Elberta councilman
