DAPHNE, Ala. — FDNY firefighters made their annual toy distribution visit to the Gulf Coast this week. The firefighters arrived in Daphne at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and were treated to dinner at a restaurant on the Causeway.

On Thursday morning, Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean presented a signed proclamation from Alabama Gov. Bob Riley commending the 32  New York City firefighters for delivering toys to children of Alabama and Mississippi.

“This group of firefighters return to Alabama year after year to spread goodwill and Christmas cheer to children along the Gulf Coast,” said Riley. “We all witnessed their courage and bravery during September 11 and they are continuing to set a fine example of service.

“Because of their efforts, Christmas will be a little brighter for so many children across the Gulf Coast. I want to thank them and let them know that Alabama appreciates them.”

After the governor’s proclamation was presented, Daphne City Council members August Palumbo and Derek Boulware, along with City Clerk David Cohen, made a presentation to the members of the FDNY.

Eight delivery trucks loaded with toys left the parking lot with an escort by Daphne and Mobile Police officers, along with Mobile County Sheriff’s and Alabama State Troopers.

The Daphne Fire Department proudly displayed a large American flag from the ladder truck over Highway 98 as the convoy got under way to deliver toys to local children.
