DAPHNE, Ala. — Simon Duffy, a veteran multimedia journalist, has has joined the Daphne Bulletin as its staff reporter and photographer.
Duffy, an English native, immigrated to the United States in 1992. His varied career in newspapers, television and the Internet took him from Sheffield, England — where he learned his craft on an evening newspaper, The Star — to the pages of the Sunday Times of London.
He later turned to sports television production, a decision that took him around the world in subsequent years.
He came to Atlanta, Ga., to produce the British equivalent of Monday Night Football — a weekly NFL game seen live in prime time Sunday nights in England.
Duffy covered Wimbledon for many years and simultaneously produced news coverage of the Barcelona Olympics in three languages.
After moving to the United States, he spent five years with CNN.com, serving variously as international editor and coordinating editor.
“We are pleased to have someone with Simon’s caliber of journalism experience join our team,” Thomas Boni, Bulletin editor, said. “I look forward to seeing what kinds of stories he will mine from the Jubilee City. I know all our residents here will give him a warm welcome, as many already have, because that’s just the kind of community that is Daphne.”
“I am very excited to be joining the staff of the Daphne Bulletin,” Duffy said. “I think it is a wonderful example of local journalism in action. The paper’s links to the community are clearly very strong and I look forward to carrying that tradition forward.”
Duffy said he was drawn to the Bulletin due to its brand of community journalism.
“I have been lucky enough to work in some large and prestigious news organizations, but nothing compares to the satisfaction of being in personal contact on a daily basis with the people living and working in the area you are covering,” he said. “It is that daily contact that allows you to develop a true understanding of the issues that concern them.
“I look forward to meeting as many people as possible over the coming weeks.”
