Night of Recognition on Monday in Orange Beach

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Monday night the city of Orange Beach hopes to start a new tradition of post-municipal election fellowship with a potluck dinner for the newly elected council and special awards for citizens.

At 6 p.m. at the Community Center the council, including three new members, will sworn in for the next four years. Following that, Mayor Tony Kennon said some special awards will be given to residents for their contribution and service to the community.

In addition, Police Chief Billy Wilkins and Fire Chief Shane Phillips will take the opportunity to also introduce the policeman and fireman of the year for Orange Beach.

The council includes new members Jeff Boyd, Al Bradley and Jerry Johnson. Jeff Silvers, Joni Blalock and Kennon are incumbents. Of those three only Blalock faced opposition in the Aug. 28 vote.

Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, will be on hand to help present the awards.

“We’re really asking all the community to support and come out for the night,” Kennon said.

Following the ceremonies, a chicken dinner will be served with residents providing side items for community potluck dinner.

“Residents can bring anything they want,” Kennon said. “Any kind of side is welcome.

“We’re trying to start a tradition of every fourth year when there is an election there being recognition of the newly elected and special folks in our town and our firemen and policemen.”
