DAPHNE, Ala. — Barrelling through a huge sign that said “Not to be conceited, but we’re undefeated,” the Daphne Trojans (4-0) took the field for Friday night’s game against Williamson (2-2) of Mobile. The Trojans extended their win streak to 19 games, beating the Lions 41-0 in Class 6A Region 2 play.
Boasting a 19-game winning streak, it could be discerned that the Trojans, in fact, do have the right to be conceited.
Daphne came out of the gates running, with its first touchdown coming at the 10:28 mark of the first quarter, highlighted by a 40-yard pass from quarterback T.J. Fleeton to Chris Sain for a 65-yard conversion.
The momentum kept building, as Fleeton carried the ball for a 12-yard touchdown run, only five minutes later, coming at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter. The quarter ended with running back T.J. Yeldon’s 4-yard touchdown run at the 1:25 mark, making the score 21-0.
Fleeton connected with receiver Horace Johnson for a 45-yard gain to start the second quarter, setting up Yeldon for a 20-yard touchdown run at the 10:21 mark. This was followed by a 53-yard Yeldon touchdown run at the 6:21 mark, making the halftime score 34-0.
Williamson was close to scoring in the third quarter, with a 45-yard carry by Brandon Peters, but Preston Hughes saved the touchdown run, tackling Peters at the 15-yard line. The Lions could not convert on fourth down and the ball went back to Daphne at its own 10.
To start the fourth quarter, Fleeton connected with receiver Jonathan McGaster on a 15-yard conversion, making the score 41-0. Fleeton had an exceptional night, connecting on 13 passes with two resulting in touchdowns.
Williamson’s highlight of the night was a 45-yard sailer from quarterback Jaime Etheridge to Arkeenmia Thomas for a 45-yard gain. The play was followed by a 17-yard run by Etheridge, all the way to the line of scrimmage, falling short of a touchdown due to a pack of Trojan defenders. A flag was thrown for unsportsmanlike conduct against Williamson, bringing the ball back to the 15-yard line. Trojan defender Elliot Williams made the biggest hit of the night, tackling Etheridge, for a 9-yard loss, saving a touchdown situation. On fourth and 29, Etheridge connected on a 27-yard pass, falling short of the goal line.
The Trojans play at Theodore on Friday night, while Williamson travels to Blount on Friday.
