MOBILE, Alabama - Sunday’s GoDaddy.com Bowl features No. 25 Kent State (11-2, 8-0 MAC) and Arkansas State (9-3, 7-1 Sun Belt) in the final college football game before the BCS National Championship on Monday.
Kent State’s Golden Flashes will square off against Arkansas State’s Red Wolves at 8 p.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in a game televised by ESPN.
Mid-America Conference champion Kent State brings a high-powered rushing attack to the game. Junior running back Dri Archer averages 104 yards per game, while sophomore Trayion Durham has rushed for 96 yards per game this season.
“It is an honor for Kent State University to be here in Mobile,” Kent State head coach Darrell Hazel said at the GoDaddy.com Bowl introductory press conference in Mobile on Sunday. “It has been four years since Kent State was in a bowl, and we can’t wait to get out there on Sunday. We are going to represent the MAC with class, dignity and pride.”
Arkansas State returns to the GoDaddy.com Bowl for the second straight year. The Red Wolves won the Sun Belt Conference title under the direction of head coach Gus Malzahn, who took the Auburn head coaching job after the regular season ended. Interim head coach John Thompson will coach the team in the bowl game.
“We are here this week to have a great time and to play a great football team,” Thompson said. “(Kent State) has great players that we will have to compete with on both sides of the ball.”
Arkansas State’s offense is led by senior quarterback Ryan Aplin, who ranks No. 31 in the country in passing and No. 32 in passing yards (260.75) per game. Aplin completed 30 of 58 passes for 353 yards, one touchdown in a loss to Northern Illinois in last year’s GoDaddy.com Bowl.
Hazel said his team was ready for the challenge of facing the Red Wolves.
“Our guys are excited,” he said. “(ASU) has a great team and we are excited to compete against them on Sunday.”
