DAPHNE, Alabama — Class 3A No. 3 Bayside Academy downed 5A Gulf Shores 35-16 on Friday and finished the regular season with a 10-0 record for the first time in school history.
Jonathan Walton had three touchdown runs and Joe Stassen scored on runs of 25 and 21 yards to pace the Admirals in the win.
"They are a pretty good combination," Bayside Academy head coach Phil Lazenby said of Walton and Stassen. "When Jonathan wasn't running he was blocking for Joe really well. Joe always runs the ball really hard. He only weighs about 150 pounds, but he's tough."
Greg Parker intercepted Gulf Shores quarterback Brandon Silvers on the first play from scrimmage and the Admirals capitalized on the turnover four plays later. Hunter Slater hit Geoffrey Stinebaugh for a 36-yard completion on Bayside's second play and Walton carried five yards for a touchdown two plays later.
"(Silvers) threw the ball into the wind and it kind of held up on him a little bit. Silvers has a great arm but the wind kind of held him up there," Lazenby said. "We were able to get underneath it. That was a big play for us."
Bayside held a 14-0 lead at the half.
Silvers had a 9-yard touchdown run and an 8-yard touchdown pass to Josh Carroll in the season finale for the Dolphins (5-5). He also completed two-point conversion passes to Tyler Stargel and Brandon Davis.
The Admirals, winners of Class 3A Region 1, will host Montevallo next Friday in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs.
