DAPHNE, Ala. — Class 6A No. 8 Baldwin County swept Area 3 champion Daphne 5-1 and 6-4 in an AHSAA first round baseball playoff on Friday.
The Tigers (30-11) will host McGill-Toolen in a second round best-of-three series starting on Friday.
BCHS got a complete-game three-hitter from Jansen Boeschen (6-0) in the opener and J.A. Harville (5-1) went 5 1/3 innings to get the win in the nightcap. Chris Andreoli pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to get the save in the second game.
"In the past week we haven't played real good and I challenged them and they responded," BCHS coach Peter Bezeredi said. "They went back to playing the ball that we had been playing all year long. I can't be any more proud them than I am right now. They played great."
Bezeredi was pleased with his team's pitching and defense in the sweep.
"I'm proud of J.A., he didn't have his best stuff early on but he battled through it," Bezeredi said. "In the first game Jansen was just dominating. That's just what we needed. We are really looking forward to playing McGill-Toolen."
In the first game, BCHS took advantage of four Daphne errors, two of which came in a three-run fifth inning. Up 2-1 to start the fifth, Harville reached on a throwing error then scored on a single from Andreoli. Boeschen drove in a run with an infield hit, and Tucker Miller capped the Tigers' scoring with an RBI single. Jordan Ebert and Joe Devan had RBIs in the third inning for BCHS.
In the nightcap, Daphne jumped out to a 2-0 lead off a Russ Mosley RBI single and a walked-in run in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning Miller had an RBI single and Kristian Johnson drove in two runs to give BCHS a 3-2 lead. Miller and Johnson added RBIs to extend the lead to 5-2 in the the fourth. Andreoli had a solo home run in the fifth.
Daphne scored its third run when Andreoli walked in a run in the top of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Johnson raced to snag a foul fly ball near the fence on the third base line in left field. Bezeredi said it was one of the biggest plays of the game.
"Huge out," Bezeredi said. "Kristian made two great running catches down the line over there that were pivotal plays in the game. He just got it done. In big games you gotta step up and make big plays."
Steven Williams had an RBI single for Daphne in the seventh.
