‘No special treatment’ for former DA

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — As he has been all along, former Baldwin County District Attorney David Whetstone was up front and candid Monday about the mistake he made Dec. 19, 2008, when he was pulled over in town and charged with driving under the influence.

Whetstone appeared in Municipal Court Monday and pleaded guilty to the DUI charge. Buddy Brackin, the Foley attorney who was appointed to hear Whetstone’s case, ordered the former DA to serve a 12-month probation and pay a $500 fine on an improper lane usage charge.

Summerdale Prosector Richard Jensen said a charge involving Whetstone being unable to find a proof of insurance card on the day he was stopped was dismissed. Whetstone paid court costs on all three cases, Jensen said on Tuesday.

“It was my intention … that Whetstone should be treated like any other defendant,” Jensen said, noting that the court’s decision in Whetstone’s case was like that afforded any other first-time DUI offender.

“There was no special treatment or favors,” Jensen said. “He (Whetstone) came in, said he did wrong, and made a mistake.”
