Christian Powell’s made the Oreo Truffles. He had to go to Georgia for a family emergency, so Rebekah Lomax and Morgan Baron stood in for CBMS in the photo.SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Students in Baldwin County’s family and consumer science classes got a little jump on Valentine’s Day, hosting the countywide chocolate cook-off Thursday at Spanish Fort Middle School.
Junior Rebecca Womack, who took first place in Spanish Fort High School’s in-house competition one week earlier, again placed first among high school students with her Frozen Mocha Cheesecake. Foley High School’s Daniel Woodrow placed second with Cherry Brownie Cups.
Meanwhile, Daphne Middle School’s Meredith Flowers placed first among middle-school contestants with her Mint Chocolate Delights; Spanish Fort Middle School’s Cole Allen placed second with Dark Chocolate Galore Cake; and Central Baldwin Middle School’s Christian Powell placed third with Oreo Truffles. Rebekah Lomax and Morgan Baron represented Powell at Thursday's competition.
Marsha Coker, a family and consumer science teacher at SFMS, said Allen actually improvised a large portion of his recipe making the decadent result even more impressive.
“Cole Allen found a chocolate cake recipe online then made some additions, including adding candy bar pieces into the recipe. It was moist and delicious,” Coker said.
Other contestants included Michael Cooper from Bay Minette Middle School, Jude Thomas from Fairhope Middle School and Yasmin Showers from Foley Middle School.
