North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce rescinds resolution supporting move of depot to Baldwin County's Bicentennial Park

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce on Thursday rescinded a March 23 resolution pledging assistance if the city of Bay Minette decides to allow retail development of the chamber’s site on McMeans Avenue and relocate the depot to Bicentennial Park.

NBCC executive Director Margo Allen confirmed Friday that the resolution had been rescinded.

“It’s been put to rest,” Allen said. “The board decided to pull away and let the city handle it.” The city holds the warranty deed dated Sept. 8, 1987. The Bay Minette Land Co. has a purchase offer for the property.

The chamber occupies the historic L&N Train Station under an agreement with the city. The resolution stated the chamber will cooperate with the city if city officials “decide it is in the best interest of economic development to relinquish the rights granted by the warranty deed for the property.”

The chamber agreed to approve the measure if the city provides the same level of support regarding office space, and a good-faith effort to support the preservation and relocation of the depot to the park in Stockton.

Allen said there were concerns by officials and residents about relocating the Bay Minette icon which is a city landmark.

Mayor Jamie Tillery was not immediately available for comment.
