The Water Works and Rocket Scientists camp took participants on three field trips and also involved classroom time where students studied water quality and also designed, built and launched bottle rockets. The field trips included a visit to Five Rivers, where students learned how landforms and wetlands help filter and clean water before it enters the bay. Students also participated in a guided two-hour tour on a pontoon boat while they learned about water quality efforts. Tyler Moore, Jordan Moore and Nathan Allen work together during a visit to Weeks Bay Estuarine.
During a visit to North Baldwin Utilities, students Joseph Santini, Cameron Casler, Will Brooks and Graham Jerkins (from left) ask Wastewater/Water Treatment Manager Darren Slaughter several questions following the water treatment portion of the tour of the Harry Still Wastewater Treatment Facility in Bay Minette. Campers also had the opportunity to see the inside of the bottom of one of the water tanks.
Students formed groups to design and build their bottle rockets, using various shapes and sizes of bottles. Once the rockets were completed, students launched the rockets to test for distance and velocity. Darla Herrin was the instructor for the week-long camp sponsored by the North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education. Transportation was provided by the city of Bay Minette . Participants included, in no particular order, Cole Burkett, Alyssa Hastings, Patrick Haymon, Graham jerkins, Joshua McWilliams, Mathew Covington, Cameron Casler, Christopher Casler, Tyler Moore, Jordan Moore, Charlie Helms, Jacob Cox, Will Brooks, Joseph Harville, Kade Frenette, Madison Bryars, Nathan Allen, Joseph Santini, Austin Steward and Sarah Catherine Caldwell.
