North Baldwin residents are no show at public hearing

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Only media

and representatives of Baldwin County Public Schools showed up for

a public hearing at Bay Minette Intermediate School Tuesday. But

School Board Attorney Scott Lewis was unfazed by the lack of

participation.

Instead, he explained that the

session was just one of several opportunities this week for Baldwin

County residents to ask questions and offer input on the Board of

Education’s redistricting process.

“North Baldwin residents usually

don’t have any questions,” he said.

That’s because the North Baldwin

voting district will remain virtually unchanged as plans for the

new map follow feeder patterns for the seven districts.

“A feeder pattern is a path that

a student will follow from kindergarten that will ultimately lead

to high school,” Baldwin County Public Schools spokesman Terry

Wilhite said, explaining that North Baldwin’s feeder pattern leads

to Baldwin County High School.

As previously reported, the

board’s effort to update its voting map is government mandated

every 10 years once census data is reported.

Changes in the map since the last

school board meeting include extending the eastern portion of the

Daphne district so that it is bordered by Fish River.

“There were not many people

affected,” he said.

Lewis explained that the next

step in the process is to get the proposed map approved by the

school board.

“This will be submitted to the

board at this next meeting on Aug. 18th,” Lewis said.

“If approved, it will be sent to the Department of Justice for

clearance.”
