Northview Cougars out-claw Tigers to spoil BCHS homecoming

BAY MINETTE, Alabama —In a battle of big cats, the Northview Cougars spoiled the Baldwin County High homecoming game by taking a 37-28 Region 2 win over the Tigers at Simmons Field in Bay Minette Friday night.

The home team scored four touchdowns and a safety, the most points in a game this season, but could not hold the NHS offense to fewer for a win. The Tigers remain winless at 0-6 heading to a road trip to face 5-2, 3-2 Dothan High next week.

BCHS head coach Bobby Moore said improvement is important but his team is hungry for a win and he believes it is coming soon.

"In the end it's about getting that win and tonight and really for the last couple of weeks I've seen more battle and desire to win in this team for a full 48 minutes to stay after it get that win than I have since I've been here. We just let this one get away. But I'm proud of

the effort and I know we are getting there. We have gotten to the point where they (the players) know they can do it. We just have to cut down more on some mistakes on our own part, stop the big play — which I think we showed we limited that some tonight — and come up with a way to play better from start to finish each quarter. We didn't

get there tonight but I think we're getting close."

NHS got on the board first when Johnathan Carmichael scooped up and returned a blocked punt 39 yards for the score in the first quarter.

But the Tigers stayed relevant and responded as BCHS quarterback Nate Jones threw touchdown passes to Keelen Hooks and Devonta Preston. However, NHS had two more scores and blocked a Dylan Brinkley extra point to take a 21-13 lead at the half.

Jones threw two more touchdown passes in the second half, one to Goins and one to JaQuan Finch, but the Cougars cushioned the lead with a 27-yard field goal by Zach Shirah.

A safety in the third quarter added some spark to the BCHS side as well as two points. The Tiger defense also made a valiant stand and stop inside their own five to takeover on downs but stalled on the series. Short punts and penalties also kept Baldwin County (0-7, 0-5 6A Region 2) backed up with two touchdowns negated and one play to the 6-inch-line was also called back. An apparent interception by Juwan Judge for the Tigers was ruled a simultaneous catch and awarded to NHS. Both teams lost one fumble.

Andre Cox set up each Tiger TD with dynamic runs, the longest for 39 yards and finished with 159 yards on 27 carries. Jones completed 13 of 35 passes for 189 yards, the longest to Quaestras Barnes went for 45 yards. NHS quarterback Jalin Harris was 10-of-25 passing for 251 yards and ran for 110.

Northview improved to 4-3, 2-3 and will host 5-2, 4-1 Foley.
