Norville “Nod” Langdon Nelson, 86, of Mountain Brook, Ala. died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at Fair Haven Rehabilitation Facility in Birmingham.
He was born June 18, 1927 in Point Clear to Charles E. and Minnie Nelson. He was the youngest of 10 children.
He graduated from Fairhope High School in 1945, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and captain of the football and basketball teams.
He served in the US Navy during World War II.
He graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in communications, and worked at WUOA where he served as FM 25 radio writer while he was a student. He worked at WAPI Channel 13 as operations manager, WBRC Channel 6 as assistant program director and at Jefferson State Junior College as a professor, program coordinator in the Mass Communications Department and faculty advisor to the campus radio station, WJSR-FM.
He was also involved in Civitan International, and served as a Junior Achievement advisor, Boy Scout Merit Badge counselor and Little League coach.
He was an Alabama football fan, and enjoyed golf and fishing.
He was a faithful member of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at Firehouse Shelter.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Smith Nelson who he married on June 15, 1953; his sons, Norville Langdon Nelson of Frisco, Colo. and Mark Houston (Pam) Nelson of Vestavia Hills, Ala.; his grandchildren, James William (Madison) Cowan of Birmingham and Christian Arlene Cowan of Birmingham; his sister, Jean Nelson (Milton) Mastin of Fairhope; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Tuskegee Cemetery in Tuskegee, Ala. A memorial service will be held at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church on Dec. 20, 2013, at 2 p.m., with visitation following in the fellowship hall.
