NOTEBOOK: Bayside, Spanish Fort players make North-South volleyball roster

Four players from Baldwin County will represent the county in the North-South All-Star volleyball match at Faulkner University in Montgomery on July 12.

Bayside Academy’s Gabby Deshotel and Virginia Pittman and Spanish Fort’s Amber Treace and Shannon Paaymans will play for the South squad in the match, which showcases the state’s top junior players.

McGill-Toolen’s Danielle Harbin, St. Paul’s setter Mackenzie Mosley and Blount’s Chyna Rae Mose will represent Mobile in the match.

Toros selected for Champion's Challenge football game: For the second consecutive year Baldwin County will be represented in the annual al.com Champions Challenge to kick off the high school football season in August.

The Spanish Fort Toros will face Muscle Shoals on Aug. 24 in first game of the football classic at Montgomery’s historic Cramton Bowl. In last year’s challenge Daphne defeated Clay-Chalkville 24-21.

This year’s challenge will also feature Beauregard vs. Central-Clay County at 5 p.m. and McGill-Toolen against Northridge (Tuscaloosa) at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.

The Toros, who will enter their second season under head coach Mark Freeman, went 9-4 last season and reached the third round of the 5A playoffs in Freeman’s first season.

Gulf Coast Classic 1 starts Monday: The annual Gulf Coast Classic baseball tournament begins Monday morning, with games played at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex, Foley High School and Robertsdale High School.

Games will be played at 10 a.m. and 12:30, 3 and 5 p.m. at each site on Monday. Gulf Shores will play Clinton, Miss. at 5:30 p.m. at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex, while Foley will host McGill-Toolen and Robertsdale will host Petal, Miss. at 5:30 p.m.

Games will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday with the semi-finals and finals on Thursday starting at 10 a.m. Check dolphinbaseball.com for a full schedule.
