BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The month of June will start out with a splash as O Delta Day, a scholarship fundraiser for members of the Baldwin County High School Band, will feature homemade river-raft races, dessert competitions and more.
The second-annual, admission-free event will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Lower Bryant Landing in Stockton.
Attendees may enter homemade rafts into river races at noon and 1p.m. for a cost of $5, and rafts must be 10-by-12 feet and completely human powered, according to a news release.
Leah Ann Overstreet Scholarship Fund Board Member Tina Covington said in a telephone interview that the race is a memorable part of the event.
“It’s an all man-power, Huckleberry Finn-style raft race,” she said. “Last year it was hilarious. Families and friends are on teams, and that’s a fun part of it.”
Covington added that this form of entertainment isn’t foreign to the area.
“Stockton used to have river-raft races a long time ago,” she said. “So we’re reviving that.”
Guests may also submit desserts for judging by 10:45 a.m., enjoy live music, a silent auction and children’s activities, according to a news release.
Catfish and chicken plates will be sold for $10 from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. by Stagecoach Cafe and Street’s Seafood Restaurant, the release stated.
Other activities include a dunking booth, silent auction, and children can purchase $5 wristbands to participate in all games and water activities, according to the news release.
Last year’s event raised $5,000, and scholarships were awarded this year from that fund to Terry Melton, $1,000, University of South Alabama; Kristy Barber, $500 and Eva Dunnam, $500, University of Southern Mississippi; Taylor Edwards, $500, USA; LaQuinta Porter, $500, University of Southern Mississippi; Megan Shaughnessy, $500, Troy University; and not pictured, Jessie Minter, $1,000, Troy; and Jennifer McDowell, $500, Faulkner State Community College, according to the release.
The scholarship fund was created to honor Leah Ann Overstreet after her death in October 2009, Covington said.
Overstreet was a teacher and became principal of Delta Elementary in 2004, the release stated. She was a founding member and president of North Baldwin County Coalition for Excellence in Education.
The scholarship fund aids BCHS band members because Overstreet’s son was a member of the high school’s marching band, and he went on to play the trumpet in the University of Alabama Million Dollar Band, the release stated.
