ROBERTSDALE — One local radio show in Baldwin County just got a little

bigger with the addition of a veteran radio broadcaster and announcer.

Scott O’Brien, who lit up the rock n’ roll airways in the 70s and 80s, joins

the team of Walter Jay, Randy Burgan and Lou Vickery on WNSI’s L.A. Morning

Show, 1000 AM, 105.9 FM and online at wnsiradio.com.

“We’re proud to have Scott O’Brien on board at WNSI,” said Jay, president of

WNSI radio. “With his professional experience and ability, together I feel

we will start to grow and become a major player in the market place.”

The son of longtime broadcaster Don Griffith, the Pensacola native grew up

in the business.

“My whole family is involved in broadcasting in one way or another,” he

said. “I’ve only been at WNSI for a week and so far it’s been a very

enjoyable experience. What we try to do in radio is to be informative and

entertaining and my goal is to be South Alabama’s news and sports leader.”

In addition to joining the 6 to 9 a.m. morning show, O’Brien said he also

plans to serve as play by play announcer for Robertsdale Bears and Lady

Bears basketball this season. He will also host “Hometown At Your Service,”

from noon to 1 p.m. daily beginning in 2009, a broadcast featuring

municipalities in Baldwin County.

“We are in the process of contacting all the municipalities in Baldwin

County,” he said. “We will feature a different municipality each week.”

O’Brien, 59, got his start in broadcasting as a teenager, working for his

father. After graduating from Escambia High in Pensacola in 1969, he was

drafted and spent two years in the jungles of Vietnam.

O’Brien got his first big break at WXIT in Charleston, W.Va. From there, he

served stations in Valdosta, Ga., and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla., before

returning to the northern Gulf Coast in 1975 at WABB-97 Rock in Mobile.

In 1980, O’Brien moved across town to WKRG G-100, where he spent the next

six years before moving to 95-KSJ. As a member of the Clear Channel Radio

team, O’Brien worked for several radio stations, primarily as a news

broadcaster for News Radio 710, where he spent the next seven years.

O’Brien then moved to WNSP Sports Radio in Mobile for a year before joining

the team at WNSI in Daphne.

During that time, O’Brien has also served as the public address announcer

for Ladd-Peebles Stadium and as PA announcer for the University of South

Alabama basketball for the past 25 years.

A longtime resident of Daphne, O’Brien has performed with the Baldwin Pops

as a singer and coached youth baseball in Daphne for 12 years.

He has two children, Nicole, who is graduating from the University of

Alabama, and Alex, a graudate of Daphne High School who is preparing to join

the U.S. Navy.
