Oil painting classes offered at Foley UMC

FOLEY, Ala. — Two more oil painting classes will start Wednesday and Friday at Foley United Methodist Church Spirit Center, 915 N. Pine St. The 10-week courses will be held from 10 a.m. to noon each day.

The course offers 20 hours of instruction for $100 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the church building fund.

The instructor is Beverly McNair of Foley, a retired teacher from Foley Elementary.

Before her move to Foley, she taught art and oil painting 18 years at art galleries and senior centers in Wisconsin, where she founded the Northwoods Society of Painters. She has sold more than 100 paintings.

This marks the eighth series of art courses offered by McNair.

“We started scheduled two classes a week when our first Oil Painting for Beginners class was oversubscribed four years ago,” McNair said. Since then we’ve offered a second class for the beginners who’ve moved up to the intermediate class and two advanced levels.”

These intermediate-advanced classes will begin Wednesday, and classes for beginners will start Friday in the Charis classroom of the Spirit Center.

The beginner course requires no previous painting experience.

Students should bring sketch paper and a charcoal pencil to the first class on Jan. 15, when a supply list for the rest of the course will be reviewed.

Upon completion of the course, each student will have finished three still-life paintings, one seascape painting done with a palette knife and a fifth painting of the student’s choice.

The final class will include time for student critiques and information on framing oil paintings.

Intermediate classes require a general knowledge of oil painting, McNair pointed out. They will cover more advanced subject matter, with emphasis on mixing and applying color with different techniques.

Students should bring their paint supplies and a canvas board to the first class on Jan. 13, she said.

Each intermediate student will complete a still-life and a winter or autumn landscape on canvas board, followed by a landscape on stretched canvas board, then painting on Masonite from a black-and-white photo, followed by a subject of the student’s choice.

Advanced classes will feature painting on smooth and rough surfaces of Masonite:  a still-life of bottles, a landscape with water reflection, a child portrait on a field of grass or flowers, a still-life of flowers, a landscape of a ragged-stone bridge and an animal portrait.
