Olive Nell Owen Davis, 89, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., passed away July 24, 2015.
She was born July 3, 1926 to L.D. and Kate Lee Owen in Bay Minette, Ala. Nell lived in Bay Minette until she left to attend and graduate from the University of Alabama, where she met her husband, Walter Homer Davis. They were married for 46 years and had three children.
Nell is survived by the three children, Kathryn Davis Long (Steve), Brooks Davis (Elaine) and Clara Davis Scarritt (Wesley); five grandchildren, Kate Feldman (Adam), Robert Davis, Elizabeth Davis (Gareth), Marne French (Jake) and Kathryn Harris; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua Feldman, Emma Feldman, Benjamin Feldman and Olivia French.
Nell loved sewing, cooking (truly one of the greatest Southern cooks ever), visiting with her grands, sitting on her back porch, watching sunsets on Pensacola Beach and cheering for the Alabama football team.
In the ‘70s, Nell and four of her friends owned the Old Seville Needlepoint Shop. She was proud to have helped needlepoint the kneelers and altar chairs for Saint Christopher’s Episcopal Church.
She enjoyed traveling to Europe, Israel, China, Africa and across the United States with friends and family.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents, L.D. and Kate Owen; her husband, W. Homer Davis; and her brother and their wives, L.D. Owen Jr. (Annie Ruth), James R. Owen (Jo Margaret) and Robert Owen (Sue).
The family would like to thank her neighbors and friends, Evelyn, Norry and Ardell. Thanks also to Dr. William Zimmern Jr., Covenant Hospice and Sylvia McHenry.
A special thank you to Nell’s caretaker, nurse and friend, Katie O’Neill. Your love and support of our mother made her final happy months at home possible.
Nell did things her way, staying at home until the end. Our Queen will be sorely missed.
A celebration of Nell’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, Gulf Breeze, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Francis Episcopal Church (Gulf Breeze), Covenant Hospice of Pensacola or a charity of your choice.
