One cyclist killed in Fort Morgan Road accident

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Gulf Shores police officials reported that one of the people hurt in an accident involving bicyclists on Fort Morgan Road, a woman, has died at South Baldwin Regional Hospital from her injuries.

A second injured person, a man, was flown out on LifeFlight and remains hospitalized in Pensacola. Police reported they were husband and wife cyclists and were struck from behind by a car traveling eastbound.

"We are in the early stages of a traffic collision investigation involving a pickup truck striking two bicyclists on Fort Morgan Road around 2 p.m.," Sgt. Jason Woodruff wrote in an email to media. "We are interviewing the driver now."

Fire Chief Hartly Brokenshaw said it was initially reported as a hit-and-run accident, but he said that turned out not to be the case.

“At first it was labeled a hit-and-run, but it wasn’t,” Brokenshaw said. “The person that hit them turned around and came back. They just couldn’t stop right there, but turned around and came back."

The accident happened around mile marker 14 on Fort Morgan Rd., and traffic was stopped to create a landing zone for the LifeFlight chopper. It was reported that the helicopter left the area with the patient at about 2:50 p.m.

The road was down to one lane after the helicopter left as investigators continued to work the scene.

Further details will be reported when they are available.
