GULF SHORES, Ala. – Gulf Shores police are reporting there were two teens pulled from the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday afternoon in separate incidents and one has died..
The identities of either teen were not immediately known.
The second teen who was pulled from the Gulf about 3:11 p.m. was pronounced dead about two hours later according to South Baldwin Hospital spokesman Kim Neal. She said hospital emergency room personnel worked on the 14-year-old for two hours before he was declared dead.
The first victim, 17, was pulled from the Gulf about 1 p.m., transported to South Baldwin Hospital and transferred to University of South Alabama Hospital about two hours later.
According to a Gulf Shores police release, about 12:39 p.m. officers were dispatched to assist Gulf Shores Fire Department with a swimmer in distress approximately 100 yards south of the beach in the 300 block of East Beach Boulevard. Officials said the teen has family in Gulf Shores.
“It’s been a pretty sad day today,” city spokesman Grant Brown said. “The second one was a church group that was in town from Mobile or Washington County, just down for the day.
“We don’t know the name of the victim, his parents were not here. The pastor of the church was trying to notify the parents to come to the hospital.”
Red flags were flying at the beach meaning high surf and/or strong currents.
“The red flags were flying and just because it doesn’t look super rough out there doesn’t mean that the currents that are underneath that can’t be seen aren’t dangerous,” Brown said. “That’s something people need to know. If you see the red flags don’t go in the water or stay really close to shore.”
