Optimist Club of Perdido Bay to host 5K Run/Walk

LILLIAN — The 5K Run/Walk is one of the most popular events at the Optimist Club of Perdido Bay Mullet Festival held on Labor Day. Competitors of all ages from Lillian and surrounding areas converge at the Lillian Community Club on Labor Day to run and walk the streets, trying to be the best in their age group.

This year's run is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Keith Cooper for his contributions to the Optimist Club for many years coordinating the event.

The Run/Walk begins at 7:30 a.m. 

On-site registration will be held from 6 to 7:15 a.m. Register in advance by visiting www.ocpb.org. The popular Mr. Mullet T-Shirts are guaranteed to those who pre-register. They may be picked up at the registration desk prior to the race.

Cost is $15 for pre-registration and $20 on Race Day. Pre-registration must be postmarked by Saturday, Aug. 29. The fee includes the Post Race Party that includes beverages and snacks.

Awards will be given to first, second and third place men and women Overall; first place man and woman Masters 40+; first place man and woman Grand Masters 50+ and first place man and woman Senior Grand Masters 60+.

First, second and third place awards will be given in 15 categories for men and women and first, second and third place men and women in the Wheelchair Division. The top three men and women 5K Walkers will receive awards, plus the top three men and women in five age groups.

There will be a free One Mile Fun Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Participants must register on Race Day. The top two registered Fun Run men and women will receive awards. The first 40 Fun Run finishers will receive a ribbon as they cross the finish line. Race "T" Shirts may be purchased for $10.

The course is rolling rural paved and dirt roads in Lillian. Split times are called at each mile. An aid EMT truck will be on stand-by.
