DAPHNE, Ala.—Daphne Public Library Director Tonja Young and Old Methodist Church Museum of Daphne Director Mickey Boykin will present plans on the Daphne oral history project at 10 a.m. Jan. 7 at the library.
The library is collecting oral histories from generations of Daphne and Eastern Shore residents. Little written information on Eastern Shore history is available to the historians, so the project’s goal is to preserve the stories of residents’ earlier ways of life and to document the effects of historical changes and events on the area.
One way is to contribute old photographs and records to the library.
“One of the things we want to do is to have people bring in old photos to be scanned,” Young said.
The project will focus primarily on Daphne but will also contain historical information from around the Eastern Shore.
The library will soon set up interviews where participants will be asked a series of questions, including relevant background information and memories.
Interviews will be informal; digitally recorded audio copies of the interviews, along with digital photos or scanned copies of original artwork, will be catalogued into the library’s special-collection section.
Wednesday’s meeting is part of the library’s regular Jubilee Mornings series, which monthly showcases various Eastern Shore personalities and projects.
Refreshments will be provided by Friends of the Library.
